With panic attacks, because the danger isn’t real, these safety and avoidance behaviours only make things worse. They prevent you from realizing that what you’re dreading isn’t going to happen. Also, your brain responds to what you do. So if you tell yourself that there’s no real danger, but continue to behave as if there is a danger, your brain will make you feel anxious. You have to show your brain that the danger isn’t real by behaving as if the danger were not real.

By using safety and avoidance behaviours, you’re telling yourself that you can’t really cope in anxiety-provoking situations without them. This makes you feel less confident and is likely to make you more anxious.
